Alcantara Valley

This magnificent gorges is made from the natural volcanic basalt created by an old eruption. The cold waters coming down from the Nebrodi mountains and Etna glaciers have cut those bissare channels through the stone. Continue our Northern coast bike tour going up the valley and cross the country side of place called Francavilla di Sicilia. Proceed with this arduous ascent between grazing lands and uncontaminated nature, toward the summit of  Sella Mandrazzi mountain, 1200 meters above sea level. This point offers spectacular views over Sicilian Northern coast, The Aeolian islands and Calabria region in the continental Italy.

Sanctuary of Tindari

The long and fast downhill road leads us through the village of Novara di Sicilia, then arrives to the sea cost and brings us to the fantastic Sanctuary of Madonna di Tindari or Shrine of the Black  Madonna. The latter dates back to the 15th century. From here we enjoy the panoramic views of Tyrrhenian coast with its magnificent Mare di Oliveri and the Laghetti di Marinello.

In addition it is also possible to visit the nearby archaeological area of Greek origin, which contains one of the best preserved theaters of its era. The end of your day will conclude by returning to our base by the same route.

The departure for Northern coast bike tour takes place from our headquarters in Giardini Naxos. First of all we start with climbing up the valley of Alcantara Gorges. We pass through some small traditional villages and enjoy the marvelous views over the river, from which the whole valley takes its name.
