Tour Description - Itinerary

Downhill from 2000mt of altitude to the Ionian Sea

🚴‍♂️ The Ultimate Cycling Adventure in Sicily

Experience an unforgettable ride cycling from Mount Etna Volcano down to the crystal-clear waters of Giardini Naxos. This breathtaking 1990-meter downhill journey unfolds along scenic roads winding through ancient Etnean villages, volcanic vineyards, and chestnut groves.

Imagine starting your day at nearly 2000 meters above sea level, surrounded by Etna’s lunar landscape, where black volcanic earth meets Sicily’s azure sky. The cool mountain breeze brushes your face as you prepare for a unique adventure: 37 kilometers of pure downhill exhilaration, carrying you from Europe’s highest active volcano to the golden beaches of the Ionian Riviera.

This is more than just a bike tour. It’s a journey through millennia and five distinct ecosystems in a single day. From the recent 2002 lava flows to the century-old vineyards of Etna DOC, from high-altitude birch and black pine forests to the fragrant citrus groves of the coast, and from ancient lava stone hamlets to the archaeological sites of Sicily’s first Greek colony.

Gravity becomes your ally on this panoramic descent, where pedalling is almost superfluous. You’ll glide along gentle curves, soaking in 360-degree views: on one side, Etna’s slopes with its smoking craters; on the other, the Ionian Sea sparkling on the horizon like a liquid sapphire; and in the distance, the unmistakable silhouette of Taormina perched on its rock like a natural balcony over the Mediterranean.

The route is a living fresco of authentic Sicily: you’ll pass through villages where time seems to have stood still, like Vena and Presa, tiny hidden gems nestled among vineyards, where lava stone houses tell stories of generations of farmers and winemakers. You’ll cycle through Piedimonte Etneo, with its baroque churches and cobbled alleys, where a coffee break offers a chance to taste local delicacies: freshly made cannoli, lemon and almond granitas, and the famous Bronte pistachio.

As you descend, the temperature rises gently, and the landscape transforms like a film: alpine vegetation gives way to ancient chestnut woods, then hazelnut groves, then silvery olive groves, and finally to citrus orchards and jasmine that perfume the air with their intoxicating fragrance. It’s like traversing different seasons and climates in just a few hours.

The Mareneve Road, one of the most spectacular sections, will treat you to 13.7 kilometers of panoramic curves where each switchback reveals a new scenario: the contrast between the black of the lava and the intense green of the vegetation, the lateral eruptive vents dotting the volcano’s flanks, and the vapors rising from the summit craters on active days.

You’ll pass through rural districts where life flows to the ancient rhythms of the land: you’ll see farmers tending their terraced vineyards, women hanging laundry in courtyards, and flocks of sheep grazing freely.

Here, Etna is not just a volcano to admire, but a generous mother who, for millennia, has nourished her inhabitants with her fertile soil, enriched by volcanic minerals that make these wines unique in the world. After the spectacular Mareneve, you’ll reach Fornazzo, an authentic rural village where lava stone houses cluster around small, tree-lined squares. Time moves slowly here amidst family cellars and lovingly tended gardens, where the elders still recount the eruptions that shaped this territory. Continuing on SP59, the road winds through terraced vineyards and ancient farmhouses, offering views that simultaneously embrace the sea and the volcanic slopes. This stretch is particularly beloved by photographers for its chromatic contrasts between the bright green of the vines and the intense black of the volcanic earth. You’ll then arrive at the Vena crossroads, a tiny hamlet where time seems to have stopped in the 1950s. The few houses scattered among the Etna DOC vineyards guard gastronomic secrets: here, some families still produce wine using traditional methods handed down for generations. Shortly after comes Presa, another hidden gem among the Etnean districts, where dry lava stone walls create a millennia-old agricultural landscape. The historic cellars carved into the lava offer the perfect temperature for aging wines, and if you’re lucky, you might meet a producer willing to let you taste their volcanic nectar.

The descent continues gently to Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, where Sicilian architecture becomes more elegant and the scent of the sea begins to mingle with that of citrus. Houses are painted in pastel colors, balconies overflow with fuchsia bougainvillea, and the air becomes warmer and more humid. This village holds a unique natural wonder: a river reserve with crystal-clear waters that flow at a constant temperature year-round, creating a tropical microclimate.

Finally, the final downhill stretch to Giardini Naxos is pure emotion: after hours of curves and mountain views, the sea suddenly appears in all its magnificence. The intense blue of the Ionian Sea opens before you like a well-deserved prize, while the sea breeze replaces the fresh mountain air. You’ll pass by the archaeological ruins of Sicily’s first Greek colony (founded in 734 BC), a living testament to 2700 years of history, before reaching the beach where, if you wish, you can dive into the crystal-clear waters to celebrate the end of this epic adventure with a view of Taormina Bay.
